Virtual Earth (6.2) Reverse Geocoder

Hvem bor her? Klik og du får en adresse ... det næste er at man også får at vide hvem som bor på adressen. Udvidet omvendt geokodning?

Who lives here? Click and you get an address ... next to come is information on who lives on that address. Extended reverse geocoding?

Virtual Earth (6.2) Reverse Geocoder

"Geocoding is the process of finding associated geographic coordinates (often expressed as latitude and longitude) from other geographic data, such as street addresses, or zip codes. With geographic coordinates the features can be mapped and entered into Geographic Information Systems, or the coordinates can be embedded into media such as digital photographs via geotagging."

"Reverse Geocoding is the opposite: finding an associated textual location such as a street address, from geographic coordinates."

Silverlight 2 Release Candidate Now Available

This evening we published the first public release candidate of Silverlight 2.

There are still a small handful of bugs fixes that we plan to make before we finally ship.  We are releasing today's build, though, so that developers can start to update their existing Silverlight Beta2 applications so that they'll work the day the final release ships, as well as to enable developers to report any last minute showstopper issues that we haven't found internally (please report any of these on the www.silverlight.net forums).

Important: We are releasing only the Silverlight Developer Runtime edition (as well as the VS and Blend tools to support it) today, and are not releasing the regular end-user edition of Silverlight.  This is because we want to give existing developers a short amount of time to update their applications to work with the final Silverlight 2 APIs before sites are allowed to go live with it.  There are some breaking changes between Beta2 and this RC, and we want to make sure that existing sites can update to the final release quickly once the final release is out.  As such, you can only use the RC for development right now - you can't go live with the new APIs until the final release is shipped (which will be soon though).

You can download today's Silverlight Release Candidate and accompanying VS and Blend support for it here.  Note that Expression Blend support for Silverlight 2 is now provided using Blend 2.0 SP1.  You will need to install Blend 2.0 before applying the SP1 service pack that adds Silverlight 2 support.  If you don't already have Blend 2.0 installed you can download a free trial of it here.

The next Internet

Midt i web 2.0 bølgen og på vej mod den næste. Google har været med til at definere meget af det nuværende internet og vil fortsat gøre det i fremtiden.

Being in the middle of the Web 2.0 wave and heading for the next. Google has defined a large part of todays Internet and will continue to do so in the future.

In the next decade, around 70% of the human population will have fixed or mobile access to the Internet at increasingly high speeds, up to gigabits per second. We can reliably expect that mobile devices will become a major component of the Internet, as will appliances and sensors of all kinds. Many of the things on the Internet, whether mobile or fixed, will know where they are, both geographically and logically. As you enter a hotel room, your mobile will be told its precise location including room number. When you turn your laptop on, it will learn this information as well--either from the mobile or from the room itself. It will be normal for devices, when activated, to discover what other devices are in the neighborhood, so your mobile will discover that it has a high resolution display available in what was once called a television set. If you wish, your mobile will remember where you have been and will keep track of RFID-labeled objects such as your briefcase, car keys and glasses. "Where are my glasses?" you will ask. "You were last within RFID reach of them while in the living room," your mobile or laptop will say.

A new generation of test automation recording for Ajax applications is here

I got this in a mail but since it is rare to see AJAX test tools around I thought it worth mentioning when it does happen. If it works it can only make life easier for AJAX web developers.

In this process, the topography of the tooth is carefully shaped to avoid sharp angles or the creation of weak areas or areas that might not provide the best adhesive seal. This preparation is not trivial, as the end product, a custom restoration, will last a very long time and will look like a brand new tooth.

This is a model of a prepped tooth. (Click for larger image)

In this example, the excavated area is the site for the restoration, along with measurements of the minimum thicknesses. Note that the restoration will have to accommodate the tooth above or below it. The opposing tooth probably has a surface that will intrude into the tooth being restored; therefore the restoration has to be designed to eliminate any occlusal interference. In other words, the dentist will do adjacent geographical accommodation. Issues like stress points are evaluated by both the software and the dentist in order to avoid problems with the tooth in the future. The result: permanent repair, perfect fit, and it looks like a real tooth.

GigaPan is the newest development of the Global Connection Project, which aims to help us meet our neighbors across the globe, and learn about our planet itself. GigaPan will help bring distant communities and peoples together through images that have so much detail that they are, themselves, the objects of exploration, discovery and wonder. We believe that enabling people to explore, experience, and share each other's worlds can be a transforming experience. Our mission is to make all aspects of the GigaPan experience accessible and affordable to the broadest possible community.

GigaPan consists of three technological developments: a robotic camera mount for capturing very high-resolution (gigapixel and up) panoramic images using a standard digital camera; custom software for constructing very high-resolution gigapixel panoramas; and, a new type of website for exploring, sharing and commenting on gigapixel panoramas and the detail our users will discover within them. The GigaPan website allows hosting and sharing all kinds of panoramas, and so the robotic GigaPan mount is recommended but is certainly not required to be part of this community.

In addition to the individual user community, we have are working with a number of partners, including The World (BBC/WGBH), and projects like the Pennsylvania Civil War Trails. Stay tuned for announcements about several other professional and educational applications of GigaPan which are currently in development. We hope to disseminate the GigaPan technology as broadly as possible for cultural and environmental understanding and for education.

Has your mom ever called in a panic, saying the computer was displaying a weird error message and that she hurried and unplugged it just to be safe--and then dunked it in the bathtub so it wouldn't burn the house down?
It makes you realize that, to some people, a computer is still a terrifying box of mysteries. Well, we think Hollywood writers have those people in mind when they portray laptop computers doing everything short of blowing up the moon.

Web 2.0 Hype Paper Wins Top Presentation at AGI

In a month from now I will be talking at a session a the Danish conference called 'Kortdage' (Map days - directly translated) and among other things I will be talking about Web 2.0. Specifically I will be touching GIS but very much with interaction and sociality and 'caotic' information flow in mind. I very much would like to read Bishops paper one of the coming days ...

Before lunch Mark Bishop a product manager at MapInfo presented a paper titled "The Hype of Web 2.0." He did a terrific job of defining the differences between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 complete with a picture of Tim O'Reilly and lots of examples of (non-map/non-geo) webpages. Toward the end there was a video of a MapInfo implementation of "slippy maps." AJAX is Web 2.0. The presentation was lively, though Bishop had to encourage audience participation (sort of ironic since Web 2.0 is about that!).

Singapore Grand Prix Track in 3D

Singapore Grand Prix in Google Earth  - This version loads in Google Earth and gives you instructions for setting up your viewing options in Google Earth so you can pretend you are an F1 race car flying down the race course. Select the "Route Animation" in the Places pane and the choose "Tools->Play Tour" menu option. There is also a time animation allowing 3D cars to move down the race track. You can adjust the speed of the car animations by clicking the little clock to the left of the time slider.
