Giant Map Is Unveiled to Explain Giant Plan

How do you plan for an event that some are calling the largest in U.S. history? You get a map that's almost as big as the city itself.

Okay, that's an exaggeration. But at a morning news conference, the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee showed reporters a 40-foot-by-40-foot map that they are using to plan for President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration Jan. 20, going over things as diverse as security to portable toilets to video screens.

It was like a giant play area for kids, complete with models of the Washington Monument and U.S. Capitol and the White House, and color-coded grids. (National Mall in green! Ellipse in light blue!) [...]

IBM: Web browsers to change over the next few years

There is no doubt that past technologies sets todays limits on ideas and thoughts about the web. If we could start over a lot would be much different ... new browsers, cloud computing, parallel processing, and much more will be an integrated part of the future web ... and as we redefine the web let's try to put as much GIS into it as possible ...

With its new Chrome browser, Google is already doing "interesting things" around multiprocessing and multithreading support, according to the director of strategy at IBM Lotus -- a company that's taking more of an interest in Chrome.

As the economy drives the Internet cloud to become more all enveloping, Web browsers till take on greater sophistication in 2009 and beyond, predicted Doug Heintzman, director of strategy at IBM Lotus, in an interview with BetaNews. While consumers and businesses figure out how to cope with sudden economic changes, they're trying to find ways to "get more" while spending less.

Browser-based cloud computing is a timely solution, because it lets people benefit from advanced information, communications, and collaboration services without the expense of either installing desktop software applications or investing in high-end computer infrastructures. [...]

Map Out an Effective Document Strategy

Using ImageNow from Perceptive Software, an ESRI Authorized Business Partner, you can quickly and economically integrate enterprise document management, imaging and workflow into the world’s leading GIS applications. Without leaving your ESRI ArcGIS or ArcIMS software, users with the appropriate access can retrieve virtually any type of document related to the exact location on their screen with one click. Because knowledge is power, this unique combination gives your personnel the leverage they need to make the right decision at the right time, instantly.

A Combination That Works

ImageNow uses key data from your ESRI GIS, captured documents or other business systems to create an automatic link between each document and an associated geographic location. This integrated approach provides context for every stored document.

Then, with the ImageNow toolbar buttons that plug right into an ESRI interface, personnel working in ArcGIS or ArcIMS can retrieve and view pertinent documents with a single click after selecting an individual or area map feature. Once the document is open, they can apply powerful document management functions, including version control and data collection, and automate business processes with seamless workflow features.

What is The Geographic Approach?

/Sik

As a GIS nerd I think spatially all the time and it's hard to image not doing that. A lot of other people share this (you?) but reality is that most people don't. And neither is GIS part of their world. Like you need to learn to read you do need too to learn to think spatially - for some it is easy for most it requires a good deal of work - GIS ought to be a obligatory part of all educations ... it does require however that teachers too learn the spatial language ...

UC 2007 logo

ESRI has been using the phrase “The Geographic Approach” for some time, in several different  contexts. Jack Dangermond has used it to describe his high-level vision for the application of geospatial technology, perhaps best illustrated at the 2007 International User Conference which employed the theme “GIS—The Geographic Approach.”

“Geography, the science of our world, coupled with GIS is helping us understand the Earth and apply geographic knowledge to a host of human activities.

“The outcome is the emergence of ‘The Geographic Approach’—a new way of thinking and problem solving that integrates geographic information into how we understand and manage our planet. This approach allows us to create geographic knowledge by measuring the Earth, organizing this data, and analyzing/modeling various processes and their relationships. The Geographic Approach also allows us to apply this knowledge to the way we design, plan, and change our world.

“The Geographic Approach is not a new idea. It is how geographers study and analyze our world. It was perhaps best articulated by Ian L. McHarg in his book Design with Nature, where he lays out a philosophical context for why and how humans should manage these activities within natural and cultural landscapes.”

—Jack Dangermond, “GIS—The Geographic Approach,” ArcNews, Fall 2007

The Geographic Approach as a methodology consists of a five-step inquiry process: Ask, Acquire, Examine, Analyze, and Act. You might even think of it as sort of like The Scientific Method for GIS professionals.

Snow conditions of Alpine skiing resorts in Google Earth

Something useful for all you skiers ...

It is undeniable: winter has arrived here in Europe. Piles of snow line the roads, white roofs andsnowmen call for your attention. I can't help but start thinking about skiing and snowboarding.

A very easy and visual way of checking the latest snowfalls in ski resorts in the Alp regions of Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland is the new "Ski resorts in the Alps" layer inGoogle Earth. You can find it in the Gallery folder of the layers panel under "Travel and Tourism".

All information on the ski resorts are provided by bergfexwho aggregates the data from the ski resorts to make sure that you get the latest data in this layer. The icons represent the average snow depth of that area; the whiter the icon, the more snow you can expect. Check back often, as these snow depth readings are updated four times a day.

Every balloons displays useful information such as the fresh snow depth from within the last 24 hours (on the mountain and also in the valley), the altitude of the skiing area, the length of the slopes, useful phone numbers, and much more! [...]

Aerial photography offers a drastically different perspective than the one you get from shooting on the ground. It includes photographs taken from aircraft, helicopters, balloons, rockets, kites, skydives, etc. It can be a rewarding, challenging and enriching experience. It can produce unique shots that look different than any other ground shot you have ever taken. Scenic flights can give you some great, memorable photos.

Below, we present over 50 amazing aerial photographs — photos shot “from above”, in the air. At the bottom of this post you’ll also find references to DIY-tutorials and further useful information about aerial photography. You can also explore other works of the photographers we’ve featured in the links at the bottom.
