The upgrade is expected to provide underwater topography, with a layer showing the depth of the sea floor. It will allow users to search for particular points of interest, such as famous shipwrecks.

Google Ocean is also expected to include underwater photography, although experts have stated that it would take hundreds of years of ship time to photograph the entire ocean bed at high resolution. [...]

The Big List Of Satellite/Aerial Imagery Analysis Software – A Through H

n the spirit of my previous “Big List” series on free GIS programs and free metadata programs comes the Big List Of Satellite/Aerial Imagery Analysis Software. While a few of these programs are general image analysis/manipulation programs, most are specifically designed to primarily deal with some aspect of displaying and analyzing satellite or aerial imagery. The posts will group applications alphabetically rather than by function, because they can be hard to classify by function, and also because it’s easier for me that way. Descriptions and feature sets come mainly from the application websites, with the occasional random note by me at the end.

There are a number of general purpose GIS programs that also include significant satellite/aerial imagery functionality, and I’ll include those in a separate post at the end of the series. [...]

Google is to launch a service that would enable users to access their personal computer from any internet connection, according to industry reports. But campaigners warn that it would give the online behemoth unprecedented control over individuals' personal data.

The Google Drive, or "GDrive", could kill off the desktop computer, which relies on a powerful hard drive. Instead a user's personal files and operating system could be stored on Google's own servers and accessed via the internet.

The long-rumoured GDrive is expected to be launched this year, according to the technology news website TG Daily, which described it as "the most anticipated Google product so far". It is seen as a paradigm shift away from Microsoft's Windows operating system, which runs inside most of the world's computers, in favour of "cloud computing", where the processing and storage is done thousands of miles away in remote data centres. What would life after Microsoft look like? Think LEGO.

Lego never goes out of fashion ... lego has the ability to adjust ... can Microsoft?

It’s important to note that the question of what happens after Microsoft doesn’t need to mean “what would happen if Microsoft left the picture entirely.” Mostly because that’s not going to happen: they’ll be a part of the post-Microsoft world too. “Microsoft” is more than a company, it’s a way of thinking about computing.

Microsoft has been the champion (that is to say both the winner and head promoter) of the single-unit personal computer since their dominance began. Their solution is wraparound, robust, and in a way, complete. But as the platform of the “personal computer” spreads further and further from the simple “box and monitor” concept — i.e. to phones, tweener devices, and appliances — the OS becomes stretched thin. As much as I like Windows 7, I don’t see it running my fridge. [...]

GoEverywhere: Symantec's SAAS Workspace in the Cloud

Symantec launches its GoEverywhere SAAS online workspace as a beta. The GoEverywhere cloud computing platform, intended as an alternative to software from Microsoft and several startups, lets users aggregate and access Web applications from a single Webtop screen. Symantec applies its data storage and security magic to provide a repository that allows single sign-on access.

With products like Microsoft Live Workspace and Huddle and the myriad startups offering similar applications, one might think that the world doesn't need another online workspace.

That isn't stopping Symantec, which Jan. 26 rolled out a free beta of its GoEverywhere secure SAAS (software as a service) workspace that lets users access their Web applications from one location through a browser.  [...]

All Streets

Jeg har set mange lignende kort hvor kun alle de danske veje var vist og sjovt nok ender det med at ligne Danmark på en prik ... Så mange veje og så hænger de sammen med veje som fører hele vejen til f.eks Beijing ...

I've seen similar maps of all Danish roads and it's no surprise that what you end up with is a map looking quite similar to Denmark ... So many roads and thinking about it they all connect with roads leading to say ... Beijing and Johannesburg ...

All of the streets in the lower 48 United States: an image of 26 million individual road segments. No other features (such as outlines or geographic features) have been added to this image, however they emerge as roads avoid mountains, and sparse areas convey low population. This began as an example I created for a student in the fall of 2006, and I just recently got a chance to document it properly.

Alaska and Hawaii were initially left out for simplicity's sake, but I felt guilty because of the sad emails received from zipdecode visitors. Unfortunately, the two states don't "work" because there aren't enough roads to outline their shape, so I left them out permanently. More technical details can be found here and additional updates here.

Hybrid positioning refers to handsets that use GPS and another technology to determine the device's location. Such solutions use Wi-Fi access points, cell towers, TV towers and their related signals, RFID and/or Bluetooth as a companion for when GPS is not enough. A recent report suggests growing use of hybrid solutions. What might your future and that of geospatial marketplace look like as these solutions proliferate? Our editors share some scenarios and point out gaps in the existing infrastructure, i.e., places to make money. [...]

Gore is set to join Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt and Marissa Mayer, vice president of search products and user experience, at the on February 2 event at the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco's newly rebuilt aquarium, planetarium, and natural history museum. But it's another speaker's name that gives the tip-off about what the event might be about.

That person is oceanographer Sylvia Earle, explorer-in-residence at the National Geographic Society and the founder of the Deep Search Foundation.

Hmm--an aquarium, oceanographer, and a high-profile politician interested in the fate of the Earth. Perhaps this will be the announcement of Google's work to add 3D ocean maps to Google Earth? [...]

Megan McClain, Staff Writer
Copenhagen is one of the most environmentally conscious cities in the world. The city government's initiative Environment Metropolis: Our Vision 2015 has set high environmentally conscious standards for its citizens.

In 2006, Copenhagen received the European Environmental Management Award, which is given for long-term holistic environmental planning, and it is also one of eight cities nominated for the title of European Green Capital, a new award from the European Commission.

A Copenhagen family is living in Redlands for eight months, and they have noticed difference in daily life her compared with Denmark.

Thomas Balstroen, 52, his wife Charlotte Bjerregaard, 43, and their daughter Karoline Balstroen, 12, are in Redlands while the couple are in training in ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute. Balstroen is an associate professor in geography at the University of Copenhagen, and Bjerregaard is a GIS (geographic information systems) specialist who works with cartography and nautical charting.

"We have only met kind people here," Balstroen said about Redlands. [...]
