Family brings Danish 'green' habits to Redlands

Copenhagen is one of the most environmentally conscious cities in the world. The city government's initiative Environment Metropolis: Our Vision 2015 has set high environmentally conscious standards for its citizens.

In 2006, Copenhagen received the European Environmental Management Award, which is given for long-term holistic environmental planning, and it is also one of eight cities nominated for the title of European Green Capital, a new award from the European Commission.

A Copenhagen family is living in Redlands for eight months, and they have noticed difference in daily life her compared with Denmark.

Thomas Balstroen, 52, his wife Charlotte Bjerregaard, 43, and their daughter Karoline Balstroen, 12, are in Redlands while the couple are in training in ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute. Balstroen is an associate professor in geography at the University of Copenhagen, and Bjerregaard is a GIS (geographic information systems) specialist who works with cartography and nautical charting.

"We have only met kind people here," Balstroen said about Redlands. [...]
