Robotics researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have developed a pilotless helicopter with a LIDAR instrument that can map the terrain below within two to three inches accuracy. The technology has been commercialized as SkEyes Unlimited Since 1996, and there have been sales of the technology to the Department of Defense and Japan.

The current configuration of the technology costs $1 Million, but the hope is that with more orders the price will come down. Learn more here at PopCity.
