ESRI UC Day 2 - ArcGIS 9.4 The Road Ahead

Ingen dansk oversættelse ...

The Road Ahead is always on my list, here is what I gathered from the ArcGIS 9.4 - The Road Ahead session.

Damien Spangrud started out with a small survey: how many use ArcGIS 9.x with x lower than 2? How many still uses 9.2? How many now uses 9.3? It looked as if the room was divided into 3 equally large groups.

Then some info on 9.3: SPs for 9.3: SP1 -> Q4 and SP2 -> Q1.

Damien urged us to give feedback / input to tech support. 'If we don't hear about it we dpn't know about it. And even if we know about it we don't know the number of people affected'. He then turned onto how users uses the products and concluded that the patterns haven't changed but the amount of data being used have. After that he recalled the ESRI mantra (one of them): Simplify, Streamline, Share. This is the motto for 9.4. The rest of the session was about these 3 bullets. The subjects fo 9.4 is two faced, one is iterative meaning making the current functionality better, the other is innovative meaning finding and creating new functionality. Damien stressed out that we would see no demoes - that was only at the plenary. On that stage we saw the only working prototype around. 9.4 is very much still in planning and Damien could not tell anything about what and when we would see anything. It is however possible and important that we speak to them during this conference, because it is now we can contribute with new enhancement / changes to 9.4.

Rob Elkin took over talking about Desktop. He started out saying that geography might be hard to do but the tools for it should though be easy to use. In 9.4 there will be an engine service running on your desktop doing all the calculation stuff etc. He then went through the new UI using basic windows elements (think Visual Studio and the like). Publishing will be easier directly from ArcMap and validation will be key. When publishin a list of possible errors, warnings and info will be shown. This will ensure better work flow for your services and fewer surprises later on. Prepare, Send, Publish is the motto here. The send part should be taken litterally -> sending your stuff via email. Apart from being able to easily push your data out it will be more easy to pull / consume data in 9.4. Finally Rob told us about the possibility for automatic updates. User controlled.

Ismail Chivite took over telling about ArcGIS Server. Not much new here apart from now on the teams are looking more deeply into stability and performance. Better rendering and faster will also be addressed. Finally he spoke of better map cache management and a new ArcCatalogue service.

Rob Shenks was next telling about ArcOnline. He pointed out that ArcOnline sits on top of ArcGIS Server, so the advances Server takes will be directly contained in ArcOnline. Another ESRI mantra: Publish, Find, Use. We saw 5 new base maps: thematic, industri, elevation, specialty and one last one I forgot. ArcOnline will extend its locator services - also in Europe.

At the end of the session Damien was back. He told about ArcExplorer and showed the releases so far and the future ones. He reveilded that AGX 500 will be out later this month. 600 we will have to wait for till next year but the main new thing in 600 will be that it is ribbon based.

Finally we were informed about obsolete platforms when talking 9.4:

Win2000, VB6, VS2005(?), IE6, SQL2000, Oracle 9i.
This list is not complete.
