My Take on the ESRI User Conference

The following has been send to Directionsmag in hope of winning one of their prizes.

Have you seen ’GIS and the City’? Neither have I but then again the title just don’t really hit me or any other for that matter. Now change it to ‘Sex and the City’ and you’ll have a blockbuster success movie on your hand. Just three letters with a totally different meaning. But how about it if GIS were as hot as SEX? (for some it might be but that is not the point). What would the opening session at ESRI User Conference then look like?

Jack Dangermond the charismatic leader of the ESRI company has he got it? I’m a male so I don’t really qualify to answer this question but I do know that money and power have the S potential.

Jack would start out by stating that the motto for this years conference is SEX ... , sorry GIS in action. Then he would present the top 10 improvements in ArcGIS especially the one where users must send error reports back in order to make SEX, sorry again, GIS better.

Then the concepts of mash ups would be laid out – now todays technology has made it possible for everyone to put GIS together using all kinds of sources – and now with 9.3 ESRI finally can make out with all the REST.

User Interfaces are important if you want GIS (I didn’t say the S word). ESRI will in the near future (with 9.4 and AGX 600) put on some very nice cool make up and surely become an eye catcher in the crowd. It is no longer ‘Ugly Betty’ but ‘Pretty Woman’. Talking about UI at the plenary session we also saw the new FLEX api in action. If that’s not sexy I don’t know what is. And then comes Silverlight – it’s gonna be hot.

First came Google then Microsoft and ESRI and now surely GIS/SEX will never be the same again. 3D globes has always attracted attention.
