Why was MarineMap established?
Storing, distributing, and Web-based mapping of geospatial data is technically challenging and often expensive. For many organizations, it is not feasible to hire the staff and buy the hardware and software required to perform these functions in house. In addition, special expertise is needed for developing and managing geospatial databases and mapping applications for the marine environment. MarineMap has the expertise and an established, advanced system of hardware and software. Through MarineMap, organizations can share in these capabilities without the cost and technical challenges of doing it themselves.

What infrastructure and staff does MarineMap maintain?
MarineMap has a network of eight servers dedicated to marine geodatabases and mapping. We use Microsoft SQL Server for virtually unlimited data storage and ArcSDE for making those data available to Web-map services (ArcIMS), desktop GIS applications (ArcGIS Desktop), and custom mapping applications (ArcGIS Server). The Web-mapping and database services are distributed across multiple servers to maximize performance. MarineMap has a small staff with expertise in developing and maintaining geodatabases and Web-based maps of the marine environment.

Where is MarineMap located?
MarineMap is located physically at the Marine Science Institute of the University of California, Santa Barbara. However, we work with clients around the U.S. and the world.

What services does MarineMap provide?
We can help with every aspect of planning, building, and hosting geodatabases and Web-based mapping tools. We play a behind-the-scenes role in technical development and support for our clients.
